i spoke to nancy pelosi earlier in the weekend and she said the no. 1 factor to break gridlock in washington is going to come from the constituents of congressmen and women. that may really what about makes the difference as opposed to anything that mr. obama had to say today, but i guess we'll see. >>> if you remember nothing else tonight, remember this. we are your super bowl station and so we want to see your 49ers spirit. come on! hey, these guys are in the spirit. here's brent, irene and tatiana of fairfield doing their best kaepernicking move, very good, we approve and jess in brentwood sent this in about 45 minutes ago. clearly it's a family that is torn a bit and ryan in san jose says he's a super fan who has had front row season tickets since 1991. wouldn't it be so we'll be showing more fan photos later in the newscast. keep them coming to news@kpix.com. >>> would be it nice to go to the came? of course. we can only imagine how much it would cost, so we asked kiet do to crunch the numbers. >> reporter: at the 49ers official team store in palo alto, it's a question many fans haven't

i think what i'm hearing from nancy pelosi and also ed lee and gene quan is they want to see law enforcement officials, sheriffs, police chiefs and police cops on the street. people who have more credibility. people who buy guns to protect the public, essentially, to be really front and center in this debate because they feel that those constituencies can be more effective in talking to republicans. i mean, let's face it, oakland, san francisco, all the bay area delegation is going to be for gun control legislation. whether it's the assault ban or background checks or anything else. but i think something -- some new voices need to come forward and really be mobilized behind the president in order to move some of these republican votes and democrats in tough districts. >> so, scott, serious issues aside, i mean, let's not forget there's an inauguration happening as well in washington. taking place really amid much history. it's the 50th anniversary of the "i have a dream" speech by dr. martin luther king. it's also on martin luther king holiday. what's the mood there in washington? >> well, i

nancy pelosi rejected the plan as a gimmick. she's correct. this gimmick is the only thing republicans have up their sleeves right now. john boehner told everyone two years ago the country would not default on its debt. >> do you agree with administration officials and other economists that defaulting on the full faith and credit of the united states would be a financial disaster? >> that would be a financial disaster, not only for our country, but for the worldwide economy. >> and president obama reminded congress the economic damage done by playing games with the debt limit. >> the last time republicans in congress even flirted with this idea, our aaa credit rating was downgraded for the first time in our history. our businesses created the fewest jobs of any month in nearly the past three years and, ironically, the whole fiasco actually added to the deficit. >> republicans basically had no choice but to retreat from their hard line position, negotiating with the american people. if the country defaulted, they would be responsible for a glob

house minority leader nancy pelosi rejected the plan. did the republicans make a real effort here or was this a gimmick as nancy pelosi said? >> the most important thing for republicans is they are re-ordering the three fiscal conflicts that the country has ahead. the three conflicts are are the sequestration and the deep cuts to domestic and military spending and the end of the funding of the government that could result in a govern shutdown and the sent ceiling fight and the debt ceiling fight has potentially the worst consequences for the economy. so the republicans thought instead of taking the debt ceiling fight first and potentially doing real harm, let's move it to the end of the first of three standoffs. >> and sequestration, of course, also a major issue. do republicans think they can win on -- on major cuts to domestic and military spending? >> probably not. i don't think they have a lot of betting power here at all. the debt ceiling was the biggest bargaining chip that they had and they just moved it to basically a totally dif
